Study on the inhibition of mild steel corrosion by N-((4-chlorophenyl)(morpholino)methyl)urea in hydrochloric acid medium

M. Anwar Sathiq and A. Jamal Abdul Nasser

N-((4-chlorophenyl)(morpholino)methyl)urea (CPMU) was synthesized and their influence on the inhibition of corrosion on mild steel in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution has been investigated by weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization and scanning electron microscopic techniques (SEM). The result of weight loss studies show that the corrosion inhibition efficiency is directly proportional to the concentration of the inhibitor and inversely proportional to the temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization study proved that the inhibitor act as a mixed type. SEM images show the formation of a protective film of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface. The adsorption process of CPMU at the mild steel/hydrochloric acid solution interface is described by Temkin’s adsorption isotherm model. The negative value of standard free energy of adsorption in the presence of inhibitor suggests spontaneous adsorption of CPMU molecule on the mild steel surface
